What makes a great journal

In our opinion, a great journal is any journal that draws you in to write.

There are lots of things that could do this:  the cover, the format, and we of course feel the paper is a big deal.  It could also be some combination of them, but the bottom line here is that you want to use it.

In the “War of Art” Stephen Pressfield talks about “The Resistance.”  It basically is anything that will hinder creativity.  When you have a great journal, it helps you beat The Resistance.  It beckons you to work on it.

We see 3 key elements to a great journal:

  1. A cover might draw you in when it feels great in your hands, smells great, inspires you with color or texture, or even elevates your spirits just to look at it.
  1. The format may also be inspiring with blank pages, a grid of dots for Bullet Journaling, or just professionally conservative lined pages might do the trick.
  1. And of course, the paper, which in all honesty isn’t just the paper. It’s also the pen you use and how it responds to the texture of the paper.  Depending on the pen you use, you might prefer smooth or you might prefer something with a little tooth.  If you use a bold ink pen you probably want a heavier stock.

At the end of the day, we want you to be inspired by a great journal.

We hope Evoke Journals meets that expectation.  If it doesn’t, we wish you all the best on finding (or sticking to) the one that is great for you.
